NHS Shetland health visitor Alice Jamieson was born in the islands, left to join the Royal Navy, where she served for 11 years as a military nurse before choosing to come home to Yell. Her time in the military armed Alice with a wealth of experience and a career path different from most healthcare workers. Find out more about Alice's life in Yell via our link in bio!

Every spring, hundreds of Shetlanders head out with bags in hand to do what these islands have always done; look after the place they call home. Da Voar Redd Up is the UK's most successful community litter pick, clearing beaches, coastlines and roadsides of winter storm debris and marine litter. Over 1,900 tonnes of bruck collected since 1988. More than 20% of Shetland's population volunteering every year. Not bad for a spring clean. This year's Redd Up runs 18–24 April 2026. Registration is open now — link in bio to sign up before 15 April.
Celebrated Shetland fiddler, teacher and composer Catriona Macdonald has returned to the islands. After performing across the globe, she left her professorial role at Newcastle University in late 2025 to take up a new position as Director of Creativity and Impact at Shetland Arts in Lerwick. We spoke to her about the new role, and the long musical journey that’s brought her back home to Shetland. Read the blog via our link in bio.
