If you are one of the millions of people around the world fascinated by Jimmy Perez, Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh, and Ruth Calder, and the BBC TV series 'Shetland', we think you'll love the real place.
DI Perez was the character created by Ann Cleeves as the crime-solver in her Shetland books, which inspired the hugely popular television show.
And our islands are every bit as spectacular and fascinating as the stories and series but, thankfully, with very little crime!
To celebrate the books, the series and the much-loved characters, we've pulled together lots of useful information for fans of Shetland. As well as brilliant self-guided tours and videos of some of the show's locations, we hear from author Ann Cleeves on what first motivated her to write about Shetland and why the islands will always hold a special place in her heart.
Now in its tenth series, the BBC crime drama Shetland continues to draw audiences across the UK and around the world. Series 10 aired on BBC One from November 2025, with DI Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) and DI Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh (Alison O'Donnell) returning to investigate a new case on the islands. A further series has been commissioned.
DI Perez, played by Douglas Henshall, was the central character in the first seven series before Henshall stepped down from the role. From series 8, the show has been led by Ashley Jensen as DI Ruth Calder, a Shetland-born detective who returns to the islands to solve a case and ends up staying.
All series are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK. International fans can watch via BritBox.
